Born from the need for a digital archiving solution

Arkivum, providers of long-term data lifecycle management and digital preservation, had increasingly been asked about website and social media archiving by their existing customers, but were unable to provide a satisfactory solution.

This is because the concept was still cutting-edge and the technology in conception and development within the community at large.

Then, MirrorWeb emerged into the market in conjunction with The UK National Archives when they launched their new web and social media crawler tech-stack with automated QA features built on AWS cloud technology back in 2016.

John Sheridan, Digital Director of the UK National Archives, discusses the cloud-native digital archiving solution provided by MirrorWeb.

Fast forward to 2018 and, taking a lead from other successful technology sectors, both companies identified that concentrating on what they do well and specialise in is best practice - but collaborating to bring the specialisms together to improve and satisfy the customer need was the way forward.

Listening to the digital preservation community

It was by listening to the digital preservation community that both organisations identified the need for a streamlined digital archiving solution in universities.

Specifically, a couple of meetings with the DPC and the ARA where the whole community were talking about how this complicated need could be made much more streamlined and less burdensome for the archivist.

Rather than spend a lot of time arguing about how this may evolve and work, it was more about doing things for the better of the community. The most exciting thing was the speed of progress, with both organisations quickly bringing their tech teams together to think about the technology and improve the immediate needs.

The outcome was a low cost, low maintenance, light touch solution in terms of internal expertise, and resource pressures that would fit seamlessly into archiving best practice as referenced by Dublin Core, with MetaData tagging within a user-friendly customer portal providing the ability to capture, access, preserve and search the archives in WARCs fully recorded in managed collections.

A user-friendly, comprehensive and cost-effective digital archiving solution for universities

Making the portal user-friendly, light-touch with minimal user input to setup, crawl and replay web and social media archives in high-fidelity was paramount to its development.

The aim is to turn web and social media archiving from a complex problem into a simple, intuitive point-and-click solution, helping universities save time and resources by removing the trickiest bits of digital preservation and providing the ability to access everything in one place.

The WARCs created are passed seamlessly and automatically via an API to the Arkivum Perpetua system, preserving and future-proofing the web and social media content for all time. The value to the user is things like being able to add in additional MetaData, which is obtained from the WARC files, without a heavy touch for customers.

The partnership now covers safeguarding, digital preservation, compliances, records management and integration, and data discovery, filling a major gap for institutions seeking digital preservation as a comprehensive service with open-standards and a no-vendor-lock-in philosophy.
